August is also National Breastfeeding Month!

Breastfeeding can lead to a healthier life for children by providing protection against many common infections and nutritionally balanced meals. It can even lower the risk of allergies, asthma and diabetes later in life.

We often discuss breastfeeding as a transmission route for HIV. Yes, it is possible to transmit HIV through pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Therefore, it is recommended for HIV positive individuals to avoid breastfeeding altogether. Along with testing and treatment, this recommendation has led to a significant decrease in perinatal acquired HIV in the United States.
